หลวงพ่อพุทธทาสพูดถึงวิธีทำบุญ ๓ แบบ ว่า เปรียบเหมือนกับคน ๓ คน เอาน้ำ ๓ ประเภทมาอาบชำระล้างตัว คือ
๑) บุคคลทำบุญเหมือนเอาน้ำโคลนมาอาบ คือ คนที่ทำบุญด้วยการฆ่าสัตว์ตัดชีวิต เบียดเบียนสัตว์ ฆ่าวัว ฆ่าควาย ฆ่าเป็ด ฆ่าไก่ และเอาเนื้อสัตว์เหล่านั้นมาจัดงานบุญเลี้ยงกัน รวมทั้งมีเลี้ยงสุรายาเมาด้วย จนบางครั้งเกิดการทะเลาะวิวาททำร้ายกัน เหล่านี้เป็นการทำบุญด้วยการทำบาป เหมือนกับเอาน้ำโคลนมาชำระตัว จะสะอาดได้อย่างไร
๒) บุคคลทำบุญเหมือนเอาน้ำเจือด้วยแป้งหอมมาอาบ คือ คนที่ทำบุญด้วยอุปาทาน ยึดมั่นถือมั่นในบุญเป็นอย่างมาก เมาสวรรค์ เมาวิมาน เป็นการทำบุญด้วยกิเลสหรือความยึดติดอย่างรุนแรง ทำแล้วหวังผลเช่นนั้นเช่นนี้ เหมือนเอาน้ำที่เป็นเครื่องหอมมาอาบชำระกาย จะสะอาดได้อย่างไร
๓) บุคคลทำบุญเหมือนเอาน้ำสะอาดมาอาบ คือ คนที่ทำบุญด้วยใจสงบร่มเย็น ไม่ได้ยึดมั่นถือมั่นสิ่งนั้น ว่าเป็นตัวเราของเรา (อาจจะมีบ้างเหมือนกัน แต่ไม่ได้เป็นเหตุจริงจังให้จิตฟุ้งซ่าน สั่นไหว หรือยึดติดเป็นอุปาทาน) เหมือนคนเอาน้ำสะอาดมาอาบ ย่อมสะอาดกว่าบุคคล ๒ ประเภทแรก

บุญคือการสร้างสรรค์ชุมชน
มีเรื่องเล่าในพระไตรปิฎกว่า ที่หมู่บ้านเล็ก ๆ แห่งหนึ่ง ชาวบ้านกำลังร่วมกันทำงานในชุมชน อย่างขมักเขม้น มฆมาณพช่วยงานอยู่แถวนั้น ก็ทำความสะอาดที่พัก เพื่อเตรียมตัวจะพักกลางวัน จนสะอาดเรียบร้อยน่าพักผ่อน ต่อมามีคนเห็นว่า จุดที่มฆมาณพทำความสะอาด เป็นสถานที่น่าพักผ่อนก็เข้ามาใช้ มฆมาณพก็ต้องออกไปแต่ไม่โกรธ จากนั้นมฆมาณพ ก็ไปชำระทำความสะอาด ที่จุดอื่นต่อ แล้วถูกคนอื่นแย่งเอาที่ไปอีก ก็ไม่โกรธ คงย้ายที่ไปเรื่อย ๆ เช่นนี้ พร้อมกับคิดว่าคนเหล่านี้ได้รับความสุขก็ดีแล้ว เขามีความสุขจากที่ของเราจากการกระทำของเรา การกระทำของเราเป็นการกระทำที่เป็นบุญ บุญนี้จึงให้ความสุขแก่เราด้วย
มฆมาณพทำความสะอาดที่สาธารณะเช่นนี้ เป็นเหตุให้กลับบ้านค่ำมืด เพื่อนบ้านถามว่าไปทำอะไรมา ก็ตอบว่า "ไปทำบุญชำระทางสวรรค์" ต่อมามีชายหนุ่มในหมู่บ้านเห็นด้วยกับวิธีการทำบุญแบบนี้ ก็มาช่วยมฆมาณพมากมายรวมเป็นกลุ่มถึง ๓๓ คน
ตัวมฆมาณพเอง ต่อมาก็กลายเป็นหัวหน้ากลุ่มทำบุญ ด้วยการสร้างสรรค์ชุมชน ก็ได้รับความเชื่อถือจากชาวบ้านเป็นอย่างดี เขาจึงชักชวนชาวบ้านให้มีความเอื้อเฟื้อเผื่อแผ่แบ่งปันกันและกัน และร่วมกันละเว้นจากอบายมุข สุรายาเมา สิ่งเสพติดและการพนัน จนชาวบ้านหันมาถือศีลกันทั่วหน้า
ยังไม่หมดแค่นั้น ชาวบ้านในหมู่บ้านนี้ยังรวมตัวกันพัฒนา ปรับถนนหนทาง สร้างศาลาที่พักตามทาง ขุดบ่อน้ำ สร้างสะพาน ปลูกไม้พุ่มไม้กอ ไม้ดอกไม้ประดับต่าง ๆ จนเกิดความสวยงาม
มฆมาณพและเพื่อน ๆ ผู้เป็นนักทำบุญทั้งหลายได้ทำบุญด้วยการสร้างสรรค์ชุมชนเช่นนี้ เมื่อสิ้นชีวิตไปแล้วได้ไปเกิดในสวรรค์ ตัวมฆมาณพผู้เป็นหัวหน้านักทำบุญ ไปเกิดเป็นท้าวสักกะ คือพระอินทร์ในกาลต่อมา
แม้แต่การช่วยกันบริการสถานที่สาธารณะในชุมชนให้เกิดความสะอาด สะดวกสบาย ก็ยังเป็นบุญ การทำบุญจึงสามารถทำได้ไม่จำกัดสถานที่ ไม่จำกัดกาล และยังมีรูปแบบวิธีการที่สร้างสรรค์มากมาย

บุญ ๑๐ วิธี
ตามหลักพุทธศาสนา มีการทำบุญด้วยกัน ๑๐ วิธี เรียกว่า บุญกิริยาวัตถุ ๑๐ (สิ่งที่เป็นที่ตั้งแห่งการทำบุญ ๑๐ ประการ) คือ
๑. ให้ทาน แบ่งปันผู้อื่นด้วยสิ่งของ ไม่ว่าจะให้ใครก็เป็นบุญ (ทานมัย) การให้ทาน เป็นการช่วยขัดเกลา ความเห็นแก่ตัว ความคับแคบ ความตระหนี่ถี่เหนียว และความติดยึดในวัตถุ นอกจากนี้สิ่งของที่เราแบ่งปันออกไป ก็จะเป็นประโยชน์กับบุคคล หรือชุมชนโดยส่วนรวม
๒. รักษาศีล ก็เป็นบุญ (ศีลมัย) เป็นการฝึกฝนที่จะ ลด ละ เลิก ความชั่ว ไม่ไปเบียดเบียนใคร มุ่งที่จะทำความดี เอื้อเฟื้อเผื่อแผ่ผู้อื่น เป็นการหล่อเลี้ยงบ่มเพาะให้เกิดความดีงาม และพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตไม่ให้ตกต่ำ

๓. เจริญภาวนา ก็เป็นบุญ (ภาวนามัย) การภาวนา เป็นการพัฒนาจิตใจ และปัญญา ทำให้จิตสงบ ไม่มีกิเลส ไม่มีเรื่องเศร้าหมอง เห็นคุณค่าสิ่งต่าง ๆ ตามความเป็นจริง ผู้ที่ภาวนาอยู่เสมอย่อมเป็นหลักประกันว่า จิตจะมีความสงบ ชีวิตมีความสุข คุณภาพชีวิตดีขึ้น สูงขึ้น

๔. อ่อนน้อมถ่อมตน ผู้น้อยอ่อนน้อมถ่อมตนต่อผู้ใหญ่ ผู้ใหญ่ก็แสดงออกในความมีเมตตาต่อผู้น้อย และต่างก็อ่อนน้อมต่อผู้มีคุณธรรม รวมถึงการให้เกียรติ ให้ความเคารพในความแตกต่างซึ่งกันและกัน ทั้งในความคิดความเชื่อ และวิถีปฏิบัติ ของบุคคลและสังคมอื่น เป็นการลดความยึดมั่นถือมั่น ในความเป็นตัวตน ก็เป็นบุญ (อปจายนมัย)

๖. เปิดโอกาสให้คนอื่น มาร่วมทำบุญกับเรา หรือในการทำงาน ก็เปิดโอกาสให้คนอื่น มีส่วนร่วมทำ - ร่วมแสดงความคิดเห็น รวมไปถึงการอุทิศส่วนบุญ ให้แก่ผู้ที่ล่วงลับไปแล้วด้วย ก็เป็นบุญ (ปัตติทานมัย)

๙. แสดงธรรม ให้ธรรมะ และข้อคิดที่ดี กับผู้อื่น แสดงธรรม นำธรรมะไปบอกกล่าว เผื่อแผ่ให้คนอื่นได้รับฟัง ให้เขาได้รู้จักวิธีการดำเนินชีวิตที่ดี เป็นเรื่องของความจริง ความดี ความงาม ก็เป็นบุญ (ธรรมเทศนามัย)
๑๐. ทำความเห็นให้ถูกต้อง และเหมาะสม มีการปรับทิฏฐิ แก้ไขปรับปรุงพัฒนาความคิดเห็น - ความเข้าใจให้ถูกต้องตามธรรม ให้เป็นสัมมาทัศนะอยู่เสมอ เป็นการพัฒนาปัญญาอย่างสำคัญก็เป็นบุญ (ทิฏฐุชุกรรม)

ทิฏฐุชุกรรม หรือ สัมมาทัศนะ เป็นสิ่งที่ขาดไม่ได้ในการทำบุญทุกชนิด และทุกโอกาส จะต้องประกบและประกอบเข้ากับบุญกิริยาวัตถุข้ออื่นทุกข้อ เพื่อให้งานบุญข้อนั้น ๆ เป็นไปอย่างถูกต้องตามความหมายและความมุ่งหมาย พร้อมทั้งได้ผลถูกทาง

บุญและความมุ่งหมายแห่งบุญ ๓ ระดับ
๑. เราทำบุญก็เพื่อประโยชน์สุขปัจจุบัน (ทิฏฐธัมมิกัตถะ) คือ เพื่อให้เกิดลาภบริวาร สถานภาพความเป็นอยู่ ความสุข คำชมเชย สนองตอบกลับมา นั่นคือคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดี เศรษฐกิจที่ดี และการยอมรับที่ดีจากสังคมรอบข้างที่เราอยู่ ที่สุดก็เพื่อให้คนเรารู้จักเห็นอกเห็นใจกัน ช่วยเหลือกันฉันพี่น้อง คนที่เดือดร้อนก็ได้รับการดูแลเอาใจใส่ ไม่ถูกทอดทิ้ง มีชีวิตอยู่ร่วมกันเป็นสังคมที่มีความสุข เพราะคนเราในโลกต้องเรียนรู้ที่จะอยู่ร่วมกันด้วยความเอื้ออาทรต่อกัน จะอยู่แบบตัวใครตัวมันไม่ได้
๒. เราทำบุญเพื่อประโยชน์สุขที่สูงขึ้น (สัมปรายิกัตถะ) นั่นคือในระดับจิตที่สูงขึ้นไป เพื่อเราจะได้เรียนรู้ที่จะพัฒนาตัวเอง ให้เจริญเติบโตขึ้นมาเป็นบุคคลที่มีศีลธรรม มีคุณธรรม มีจิตใจเอื้อเฟื้อเผื่อแผ่ มีความอบอุ่นซาบซึ้งสุดใจด้วยศรัทธา ภาคภูมิใจ อิ่มใจ แกล้วกล้ามั่นใจในชีวิตที่ได้ทำบุญ โดยกินความรวมถึงจุดหมายต่อมาเมื่อละโลกนี้ไปแล้วด้วย
๓. เราทำบุญเพื่อประโยชน์อย่างยิ่ง (ปรมัตถะ) คือ ประโยชน์ที่เป็นสาระแท้จริงของชีวิต ได้แก่ การรู้แจ้งสภาวะของสิ่งทั้งหลายตามความเป็นจริง รู้เท่าทันคติธรรมดาของโลกของสังขารธรรม ไม่ตกเป็นทาสของโลกและชีวิต มีจิตเป็นอิสระปลอดโปร่งผ่องใส ไม่หวั่นไหวไปกับความผันผวนปรวนแปรของชีวิต หรือการพรัดพรากจากสิ่งอันเป็นที่รักในชีวิต ไม่ถูกบีบคั้นโดยความยึดมั่นของตนเอง เย็นสว่างไสวโดยสมบูรณ์
ความมุ่งหมายของบุญทั้ง ๓ ระดับนี้ เราจะเห็นได้จาก พิธีกรรมทางพุทธศาสนาที่มุ่งประโยชน์ทั้ง ๔ ด้าน ได้แก่ ด้านวัตถุ หรือความเป็นอยู่ ด้านสังคม ซึ่งรวมถึงพฤติกรรมความเอื้อเฟื้อ เผื่อแผ่เกื้อกูลกัน ความสัมพันธ์ด้านจิตใจ และ ด้านปัญญา ทั้งหมดนี้ล้วนมีคุณค่าต่อคุณภาพชีวิตและสังคม อันไม่อาจขาดด้านใดด้านหนึ่งไปได้ พูดง่าย ๆ คือพิธีกรรมทางพุทธศาสนามุ่งให้เกิดประโยชน์ครบถ้วน อย่างเป็นองค์รวมตามความมุ่งหมาย
ประโยชน์ทั้ง ๔ ด้านนี้เรายังเห็นได้จากประเพณีพิธีกรรมของชุมชน เช่น ลอยกระทง บุญบั้งไฟ กล่าวคือ ไม่เพียงแต่มีจุดมุ่งหมายอนุรักษ์ลำน้ำหรือเพื่อให้ฝนฟ้าตกต้องตามฤดูกาล อันเป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับชีวิตความเป็นอยู่โดยตรงเท่านั้น ยังเอื้อให้เกิดความสนิทสนมกลมเกลียวในชุมชน และมีกิจกรรมทางศาสนาเพื่อให้เกิดความมั่นใจในชีวิต รวมทั้งมีการปลูกฝังตอกย้ำทัศนคติที่เคารพธรรมชาติ และจิตสำนึกต่อชุมชน ซึ่งล้วนเป็นคติที่สำคัญในการดำเนินชีวิต
โดยสรุปแล้ว ปุถุชนคนเราทำบุญก็เพื่อ "ตัวเอง" แต่คงดีกว่าถ้าเราทำบุญเพื่อ "พัฒนาจิต" และคงดียิ่งขึ้นไปอีก ถ้าเราทำบุญเพื่อพัฒนา "สติปัญญา" ไปด้วย และคงดีที่สุด ถ้าเราช่วยกันทำบุญทุกรูปแบบ (บุญกิริยาวัตถุ ๑๐) เพื่อช่วยเหลือสังคมให้สงบสุข และดีไปด้วยพร้อม ๆ กัน

สังฆทาน
สังฆทานคืออะไร
คือ การถวายสิ่งของแก่หมู่พระภิกษุสงฆ์ เป็นการถวายกลาง ๆ ไม่จำเพาะเจาะจงภิกษุรูปหนึ่งรูปใด เมื่อถวายให้แล้วก็ถือว่า พระภิกษุสงฆ์ทุกรูปมีสิทธิ์ใช้สอยสิ่งของเหล่านั้นตามสะดวก อาจจะมีเพียงตัวแทนสงฆ์เพียงรูปเดียวมารับประเคน ก็ถือว่าเป็นสังฆทานเหมือนกัน
มีทานอีกรูปแบบหนึ่งที่คล้าย ๆ สังฆทาน เป็นทานที่มีอาณาเขตกว้างขวางกว่า คือ ทานที่ให้แก่หมู่พวกที่ไม่เฉพาะกลุ่มบุคคลใดบุคคลหนึ่ง เรียก สาธารณทาน เป็นทานที่ไม่จำกัดเฉพาะในรั้ววัด เป็นการให้ที่ไม่มีขอบเขต สังฆทานเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของสาธารณทานเช่นกัน
ส่วนการถวายทานที่ให้เฉพาะพระภิกษุสงฆ์รูปนั้นรูปนี้ เรียก ปาฏิปุคคลิกทาน มีอานิสงส์น้อยกว่าทานสองประเภทข้างต้น เพราะเป็นการจำกัดเฉพาะบุคคลว่าต้องเป็นคนนั้นคนนี้ การให้ทานแก่ส่วนรวมย่อมได้อานิสงส์มากกว่า
